Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome in Essex, Europe’s largest surviving First World War aerodrome, has enjoyed yet another successful family event in the Essex sunshine.

The intrepid museum, battling against closure due to catastrophic road closures earlier in the year, has mounted repeated fund-raising events this summer.

The Large Model Flying show welcomed pilots from all over the country to show their skills and amazing aircraft – including jet aircraft. The skies were filled with reproductions of all periods, even a Lancaster Bomber, hero of the Second World War.

Visitors explored the award-winning exhibitions across the Arts-Council-England-accredited site, including the full-size aircraft in the hangars, before enjoying the large selection of ground models. There were even opportunities to get up close with miniature steam traction engines.

Museum Operations Supervisor Doug Shorter, overseeing the event, was very happy.

“We have had a great turn-out, so we are hopeful it will give a much-needed boost to our fund-raising. The Large Model flyers have been brilliant – it’s just as complicated to display these aircraft as the full-size ones, so we really appreciate all the effort they put in to help the museum. They have put on some great displays – as have the teams on the ground. The feedback has been excellent from our visitors.”
